As a direct result of the Save Golden Lane Leisure Centre Campaign, at the May Children’s and Community Services Committee, members voted to revisit the refurbishment option approved at the January committee meeting. The plans approved in January would result in the loss of the badminton court / multi-use sports hall.
The Save GLLC campaign and GLERA are very concerned that the purpose of the public engagement events organised by the Corporation is to push through the plans approved in January. It is really important that residents who believe that the badminton court / multi-use sports hall is an essential part of the leisure centre offer try and take every opportunity to make their opinions and concerns heard.
As part of the re-engagement residents have been presented with two options: OPTION A (refurbishment + enhancement of existing arrangement) and OPTION B (refurbishment + reconfiguration). There is an accompanying questionnaire where are residents are asked to choose between the two options and rate various facilities.
The questionnaire closes 18 JUNE.
things to be aware of before completing the questionnaire
Whilst both Save GLLC campaign and GLERA encourage residents to complete the questionnaire, please note that there are a number of question that relate to, or appear to relate to, facilities associated with OPTION B only. The survey DOES NOT make this clear. (Scroll to bottom of post to see questions.)
If you are unsure as to the impact of your answer, how it will be interpreted, there is always the option to score zero and then explain why in Q20, an open feedback opportunity.
Q13 | STUDIO SPACE
There is no definition of studio space provided in the presentation boards (see below). In theory the multi-use sports hall could be used as a studio space, but this could also relate to the need for wellbeing studios? There does not appear to be enough information to answer this question.
Q15 | WELLBEING STUDIO
In OPTION A this is the small studio attached to the multi-use sports hall; in OPTION B that studio becomes part of the health and fitness suite (currently multi-use hall), and three wellbeing studios are planned for the space that is currently the gym. The survey doesn’t allow you to indicate how many wellbeing studios you think are appropriate /necessary… You may want to make a note in Q20.
Q16 | SAUNA / STEAM ROOM
It’s worth noting that the sauna / steam room proposed in both options will mean the loss of the poolside seating area for those parents who need to be present whilst their children swim. This could be devastating for SEND families (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities) and may actually prevent participation.
Q17 | CONSULTATION + TREATMENT SPACE
OPTION A allows for a ‘flexible consultation space’ and OPTION B allows for a ‘flexible consultation / treatment room’. Is this an omission on the board, or is this question just asking about the facility offered in OPTION B? This lack of clarity may be worth noting in Q20.
Q18 | POWER ASSISTED STUDIO
This facility would only be available under OPTION B.
the need for co-design
GLERA and SAVE GLLC believes that OPTION B needs to be rejected out of hand and that OPTION A needs to be revisited. A proper co-design process could look again more closely at the proposals for the changing village and break out area, and review whether a sauna is more important than a parent viewing area.
