golden lane leisure centre survey

As a direct result of the Save Golden Lane Leisure Centre Campaign, members of the Children’s and Community Services Committed voted at the 5 May committee meeting to revisit the refurbishment option approved at the January committee meeting. The previously approved plans would result in the loss of the badminton court / multi-use sports hall.

The Save GLLC campaign and GLERA are very concerned that the purpose of the public engagement events organised by the Corporation is to push through these plans, and so it’s really important that residents who believe that the badminton court / multi-use sports hall is an essential part of the leisure centre offer should try and take every opportunity to make themselves heard.

As part of the re-engagement residents have been presented with two options: OPTION A (refurbishment + enhancement of existing arrangement) and OPTION B (refurbishment + reconfiguration). There is an accompanying questionnaire where are residents are asked to choose between the two options and then rate various facilities facilities.

PRESENTATION BOARDS

some caveats on the questionnaire

Whilst both Save GLLC campaign and GLERA encourage residents to complete the questionnaire, PLEASE NOTE:

Questions 15, 17 and 18 ask you to rate the importance of wellbeing studios, consultation and treatment space, and power-assisted studio. These three facilities only exist under Option B – the option that removes the sports hall. The survey does not tell you this. Rating them highly is, in effect, expressing support for Option B without being told that is what you are doing.

If you are unsure as to the impact of your answer, how it will be interpreted, there is always the option to score lowly and then explain why in the free text box at the end.

WELLBEING STUDIO
In OPTION A the small studio attached to the multi-use sports hall is referred to as a wellbeing Studio; OPTION B adds a further three wellbeing studios in the space that is currently the health and fitness suite (the gym). The survey doesn’t allow you to indicate how many welbeing studios you think are appropriate /necessary…

Question 13 asks to rate the importance of studio space yet no definition is provided in the presentation boards (see below). In theory the multi-use sports hall could be used as a studio space, however we suspect this will be seen as support for more wellbeing studios.

SAUNA / STEAM ROOM
It’s also worth noting that the sauna / steam room proposed in both options will mean the loss of the poolside seating area for those parents who need to be present whilst their children swim. This could be devastating for SEND families (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities) and may actually prevent participation.

the need for co-design

GLERA and SAVE GLLC believes not only that OPTION B needs to be rejected out of hand and that OPTION A needs to be revisited and for there to be a proper co-design process to revisit the need for sauna, and the proposals for the changing village and break out area.
