hatfield podium + leisure centre update

On 17 July 2025 the City of London held a meet the contractor event so that residents, local businesses and leisure centre users could meet the VolkerLaser team and learn more about the upcoming waterproofing works to Hatfield podium, originally anticipated to start in September 2025.

    Towards the end of July GLERA were provided with an additional update:

    HATFIELD PODIUM DECK REPAIRS
    Works will commence in October 2025 and last approximately 12 weeks. These works are not HRA funded and, therefore, no leaseholder recharges are applicable.

    LEISURE CENTRE SCOPE + PROGRAMME
    The detailed scope is still being established. We are poised to sign the Pre-Contract Services Agreement with Alliance Leisure by the end of July 2025, who will appoint the design team and contractors in due course. 

    Key areas we expect to be included in the scope are:

    • Full internal refurbishment of all areas, with scope to adjust layouts
    • Replacement and upgrade of all mechanical, electrical, and plant (MEP) components for the centre
    • Strip and renewal of canopy roof, photovoltaics, lighting, and drainage
    • Improve accessibility and inclusivity of the centre
    • Refresh outdoor sport facilities and improve associated nearby public realm
    • Resolve any issues relating to building fabric, such as concrete repairs and highwalks

    We will look at the best options for a resident working/steering group to follow this project through, alongside the usual committee reports, and there will be numerous public consultations before any final proposal is finalised.

    As for the timeline, we are aiming to go to committees in early-2026 to finalise agreement on the design option. The remainder of the year will be spent developing the design and consulting with all stakeholders to establish what is viable and desirable. Once agreed, we will progress with obtaining planning, building control and listed building consent prior to obtaining final committee approval.    

    It must be noted this is an indicative timetable as things may be subject to change.
